Our Club's History
The German Shepherd Dog Club of Oklahoma was the first and for many years the only German Shepherd Dog Club in the state of Oklahoma, officially incorporated on March 15, 1960. A small but dedicated group of breeders from all over the state combined their efforts to make the club a reality.
Founding members included: B. J. and Russell McCabe, Bert and Dorothy Horner, R. B. and Dorothy Hager, Jack Abernathy, Lawrence Prime, Jim Tyler, Barbara and Sam Hearn, Marge Turnquist, Bob and Marge Sullivan, Larry and Bobbie Banner, Hazel and Gordon Mitchell and Mary Searle. They held training classes, fun matches, picnics and get together's to build a group that could meet AKC requirements for a show giving club. The club's first AKC Licensed show was held in 1963 and was superintended by Jack Onofrio, who was also a member of the club at that time.
Shows were originally held in the 45th Division National Guard Armory and remained at that site until the 1970's, when exhibitors demanded an outdoor show on grass rather than the indoor show on concrete.
The club offered obedience and conformation classes have been held in that same armory for over 40 years. The club has hosted at least one show every year for the past 47 years and 2 shows a year in the more recent past.
A variety of activities continue to be offered, including training classes, shows, educational offerings and social gatherings.
